The Adriatic Convergence: How the Italian Global Series Festival is Reshaping the TV Landscape

The sun-drenched Adriatic coastline of Italy is set to transform into a high-stakes nerve center for the global television industry as the Italian Global Series Festival (IGS) returns for its sophomore edition. Running from July 3 to July 11, the event is carving out a distinct niche for itself in the crowded international festival circuit, trading the frantic sprawl of larger, more corporate gatherings for a "leaner, sharper" focus that prioritizes deep industry collaboration over mere volume.

As international producers, showrunners, and talent descend upon the resorts of Rimini and Riccione, the festival serves as a vibrant, Mediterranean-flavored crossroads. For artistic director Marco Spagnoli, this is not merely a showcase of content; it is a laboratory for the future of global storytelling.

A Strategic Rationalization of the Lineup

The 2026 edition of IGS represents a deliberate pivot from its inaugural outing. Building on the legacy of the former RomaFictionFest—which concluded its run in 2016—Spagnoli has been tasked with breathing new life into the concept of a major Italian television festival.

In a move described as "rationalization," the official selection has been trimmed from last year’s 32 titles to a more curated 21 series hailing from 15 countries. By reducing the number of competing projects, Spagnoli aims to provide both the jury and the professional attendees with "breathing room," allowing for more nuanced discussions and meaningful networking opportunities. This shift brings IGS more in line with the standards of prestigious international film festivals, where the focus is on quality and impact rather than sheer capacity.

"We wanted to open this festival to the world," Spagnoli says, reflecting on the festival’s ethos. "It’s not just about promoting Italian creation, but also the region, the culture, and the spirit of collaboration. We need people to meet. Last year, you could see an American actor, a Spanish actor, and an Italian director all together. Television rarely creates those opportunities."

The Global Roster: A Chronology of Anticipated Premieres

The festival’s approach to premieres is notably flexible, favoring accessibility and engagement over strict exclusivity requirements. This philosophy allows the program to highlight a diverse array of international narratives.

The festival kicks off with the world premieres of the U.K.-Spanish detective drama Benidorm Is Murder and the gritty Brazilian medical thriller Emergency 53. These are joined by high-profile international premieres such as James Marsh’s spy thriller Secret Service, featuring Gemma Arterton; the Korean suspense series Speaking Dead, helmed by Lee Jung-hyo; and the visceral historical epic Raza Brava, which explores the turbulent lives of soccer ultras during the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile.

"At this point, I wouldn’t insist on world premieres," Spagnoli explains. "There are too many interesting shows from around the world that deserve to be seen. What matters is that the festival functions as a platform where international series can reach audiences, journalists, and industry professionals alike."

Supporting Data: Talent and Tributes

The presence of heavy-hitting talent is a testament to the festival’s growing influence. The 2026 edition will host an impressive roster of international stars and creators, including CCH Pounder and Judith Light, who are attending in support of the social horror series The Terror: Devil in Silver. French cinema luminaries Virginie Ledoyen and Camille Razat will also be on hand to discuss the Stendhal adaptation Le Rouge et le Noir.

In addition to screening sessions, the festival will bestow its prestigious Maximo Excellence Award upon a cohort of industry titans, including Carlton Cuse, Titus Welliver, Lisa Mulcahy, and the breakout sensation Richard Gadd. These honors are designed to recognize both established craft and the disruptive new voices that are currently redefining the medium.

Official Responses and Jury Leadership

The festival’s structural integrity is anchored by its three jury presidents, each chosen to represent a distinct pillar of modern storytelling:

  1. Comedy: French actor Bruno Gouery, known for his work on Emily in Paris and The White Lotus, leads the comedy jury. His appointment is symbolic of the festival’s goal to encourage cross-border movement. "Bruno’s mother is Italian, and he speaks the language perfectly," says Spagnoli. "He could start working here tomorrow, and we want to encourage that kind of crossover."
  2. Drama: Showrunner Marti Noxon, a creative force whose work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer fundamentally altered the trajectory of genre television, serves as the drama jury president. Her presence honors the legacy of iconic storytelling. "What Marti did on Buffy changed the very concept of vampires, and those vampires have been with us ever since," Spagnoli notes.
  3. Limited Series: The legendary Nicholas Meyer, a visionary director and writer who modernized the Sherlock Holmes mythos with The Seven-Per-Cent Solution and directed the seminal Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, chairs the limited series jury.

Implications: The 60th Anniversary of Star Trek

The festival has turned the 60th anniversary of Star Trek into a centerpiece of its programming, underscoring the enduring power of franchise intellectual property (IP). The schedule includes a deep-dive conversation between Meyer and producer David W. Zucker, followed by the highly anticipated premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, with key cast members Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Celia Rose Gooding, and fan-favorite Jeri Ryan in attendance.

For Spagnoli, these sessions serve a dual purpose: they celebrate history while engaging with the modern evolution of television. He points to Jeri Ryan’s performance as Seven of Nine as a bridge between the past and the present. "[Through her character,] Jeri Ryan has explored questions about machines, artificial intelligence, and what it means to be human—all very modern concerns," he says. "The optimistic vision of a future driven by cooperation is not limited to 1966."

Bridging the Past and Future: The Reboot Strategy

The festival is also taking a bold stance on the role of legacy IP in the contemporary landscape, highlighted by a special preview event for the upcoming Netflix reboot of Little House on the Prairie.

Spagnoli argues that the industry’s obsession with reboots should not be viewed as a lack of creativity, but rather as an opportunity to pass the torch to new generations. "Intellectual property can and should live on, and it must be renewed," he asserts. "We Europeans should learn from that. There are so many Italian and European series that shaped my generation and could be just as powerful for modern audiences."

This sentiment is rooted in the Italian experience of history. "In Italy, we’re born with the past," Spagnoli adds. "These series meant something to millions of people. We need to keep looking backward to understand the present and imagine the future."

Conclusion: A New Era for the Riviera

As the IGS enters its second year, the message to the global television community is clear: the Adriatic coast is not just a destination for leisure, but a vital hub for the evolution of the medium. By balancing the prestige of international award-winners with a forward-looking commitment to IP and cross-cultural exchange, the Italian Global Series Festival is positioning itself as a permanent fixture on the industry calendar.

In the coming days, as the lights dim on the premieres and the discussions turn to the future of distribution, co-production, and storytelling, the legacy of the 2026 IGS will be measured not just by the awards handed out, but by the connections formed between the creators of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Whether through the lens of a historical epic or the high-tech optimism of a Star Trek screening, the festival remains committed to its core mission: ensuring that great stories continue to find their audience, regardless of where they were born.
